Why you need a doctor — and why tourists can't get it online
In Hungary, all emergency contraception is prescription-only. There is no over-the-counter option, and pharmacies cannot dispense it without a prescription.
Hungarian residents can use online telemedicine services, because their prescription goes into the national e-prescription cloud (EESZT), which is linked to their TAJ social security number.
If you don't have a TAJ number, that route is closed to you. A doctor cannot issue you a cloud prescription remotely. You must come to the clinic in person — and then the doctor can give you a prescription you can fill immediately at any pharmacy.
That is exactly what we do. You come in, you speak with a gynecologist in English, and you leave with a valid prescription. The whole visit typically takes 10 minutes.

From arrival to pharmacy the shortest way possible
1. Contact us: Call or book online. If today's online calendar looks full, call us on weekdays between 8:00 and 20:00 — we will check what is available and try to find you the earliest slot, depending on our gynecology schedule.
2. Come to the clinic: Central Budapest location. Bring your passport or ID card. No Hungarian insurance, no TAJ number, no referral needed.
3. Consultation with a gynecologist — in English: A short, confidential conversation: when it happened, what contraception you use, your medical history, any medications you take. No examination is required in most cases.
4. Get your prescription: The doctor selects the right method for your situation — levonorgestrel (up to 72 hours), ulipristal acetate (up to 120 hours).
5. Fill it at a pharmacy: There are pharmacies within a few minutes' walk of the clinic. Take the pill as soon as you have it.

The condom broke, slipped, or came off
You had sex without any contraception
Withdrawal failed
You missed one or more contraceptive pills
You vomited or had diarrhoea after taking your contraceptive pill, so it may not have been absorbed
Your vaginal ring was out of place for more than 3 hours, or left in for more than 4 weeks
Your patch came off or wasn't replaced on time
You were forced or pressured into sex

The only factor that reduces effectiveness is time. Do not wait to see whether your period arrives — by then it is too late. Effectiveness is highest in the first 24 hours and declines every day after that.

Frequently asked questions
I couldn't find an available appointment today. What should I do?
Call us at +36 30 366 0116, weekdays between 8:00 and 20:00. We try to fit emergency contraception cases in as early as possible. Availability depends on our gynecology schedule, so we cannot guarantee a same-day slot — but the sooner you call, the better your chances.
Do I need Hungarian insurance or a TAJ number?
No. We are a private clinic. You only need a passport or ID card and a way to pay.
Can I buy the morning-after pill without a prescription in Hungary?
No. There is no over-the-counter emergency contraception in Hungary. But you can get a prescription from us at your appointment, usually within about 10 minutes of arriving.
Can I get the prescription without coming in?
No — and no one in Hungary can do that for you without a TAJ number. Online telemedicine services issue prescriptions into the national e-prescription cloud, which requires Hungarian social security registration. Without it, an in-person visit is the only legal route.
Do we speak English?
Yes. Our gynecologists consult in English.
How long does the visit take?
Typically 10 minutes.
Will I be examined?
In most cases no physical examination is needed — it is a consultation. If you also want an STI check or a pregnancy test, tell us and we can arrange it in the same visit.
Where do I get the actual pill?
At any pharmacy. There are pharmacies within a few minutes' walk of the clinic.
Is emergency contraception the same as an abortion pill?
No. Emergency contraception prevents or delays ovulation. It does not end an established pregnancy and cannot be used as an abortion method.
Is my visit confidential?
Yes. Fully confidential and protected by medical secrecy.
What should I expect afterwards?
Your next period may come earlier or later than usual, and may be heavier or lighter. If it is more than 7 days late, take a pregnancy test. If you vomit within 3 hours of taking the pill, you need another dose.
Does it protect me for the rest of my trip?
No. Emergency contraception only covers the incident that already happened. If you have unprotected sex again afterwards, you would need it again. If you'd like to discuss ongoing contraception, we can do that in the same visit.
