STD CENTER

Did you know that sexually transmitted diseases can make it difficult to get pregnant?

The importance of STD screening

Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are far more common than most people realize. While infections like syphilis and gonorrhea are widely recognized, many others—such as chlamydia, genital herpes (HSV), ureaplasma, and HIV—often remain undetected for long periods. More than 30 different pathogens can be transmitted through sexual contact, and because many of them cause few or no symptoms at first, they can easily spread without notice.

This is why regular STD screening is crucial. At Primavera Medical Center in Budapest, our STD Center provides confidential, precise, and professional care using state-of-the-art diagnostic tools. Our empathetic approach and highly trained specialists have made us one of the leading private clinics for STD testing and treatment.

When should you get tested?

STD screening is recommended for anyone who is sexually active, but it is especially important in the following situations:

  • Before planning a pregnancy (for both partners).

  • When starting a new relationship, before having unprotected sex.

  • After unprotected intercourse with a new partner.

  • If you experience symptoms such as unusual discharge, burning, or pain.

  • If you have visible sores, rashes, or swollen lymph nodes.

I may have caught something, how long should I wait before getting tested?

If you suspect you may have been exposed to an STD, it’s important to know about the window period—the time between infection and when a test can accurately detect it:

Duration of detection of various sexually transmitted diseases:HIV: 3 hét

  • HIV: 3 weeks

  • Syphilis: 4–5 weeks

  • Gonorrhea: 2–5 days

  • Chlamydia: 2 weeks

  • HPV and Hepatitis: 1 month

Testing too early may lead to a false negative, so sometimes repeat testing is recommended.

At Primavera 34 Medical Center, we also offer laser removal of genital warts (caused by HPV). This modern, minimally invasive method is safe, effective, and allows for quick recovery while minimizing the risk of recurrence.

Your sexual health is an essential part of your overall well-being. Whether you need routine screening, treatment, or advice, Váci 34 Medical Center provides expert, confidential, and compassionate care.

Book your STD screening today and take the first step toward peace of mind and a healthier future.

STD laboratory test

This package examines three serious sexually transmitted infections. These diseases can remain asymptomatic for a long time, so regular screening is key to prevention and treatment.

Hepatitis B (HBsAg + Anti-HBs)

Hepatitis B is a viral liver infection that spreads through blood and bodily fluids (e.g., through sexual contact). It can remain asymptomatic for years while gradually damaging the liver.

  • HBsAg: shows whether you are currently carrying the virus.

  • Anti-HBs: shows whether you are protected – due to previous infection or vaccination.

Chronic hepatitis B can lead to cirrhosis and liver cancer. Without screening, an infected person can infect others without knowing it.

Why is it important?

With early detection, HIV is now easily treatable, and those infected can live long, full lives—but this requires timely diagnosis.

HIV (HIV-1 antigen + HIV 1,2 antibodies)

  • HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) attacks the immune system. If left untreated, it can lead to AIDS, which is the collapse of the immune system.

  • The HIV-1 antigen detects the virus early in the infection.

  • Antibodies indicate the body's immune response, i.e., whether it has encountered HIV.

Syphilis (RPR + TPHA)

  • Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease caused by bacteria, which initially produces insidious symptoms (painless ulcers, skin rashes). If left untreated, it can lead to serious nervous system and organ damage years later.

  • RPR: rapid screening test that indicates an immune response.

  • TPHA: confirmatory test that specifically detects the pathogen.

How STD testing works for women

The STD screening process for women is straightforward and quick:

Preparation:

  • Testing cannot be performed during menstruation.

  • Avoid sexual intercourse for at least three days before testing.

  • Emptying the bladder before the exam can make the process more comfortable.

The Exam:

  • The patient lies on a gynecological exam chair.

  • A speculum (exam instrument) is gently inserted to allow the doctor to collect samples from the cervix.

  • Additional samples may be taken from the urethra, throat, or rectum if necessary.

The procedure lasts only a few minutes and is typically painless, causing no more discomfort than a standard Pap smear.

How STD testing works for men?

For men, the process is equally efficient:

Preparation:

  • Do not urinate for at least two hours before testing to ensure accurate results.

The Exam:

  • The consultation begins with a brief discussion of symptoms and sexual history.

  • The doctor examines the groin area, penis, and urethral opening.

  • A small sterile swab is inserted 1–2 cm into the urethra to collect a sample.

  • Additional samples from the throat or rectum may also be taken.

Although slightly uncomfortable, the procedure is quick and painless for most patients.

Why is regular dermatological screening important?

Many sexually transmitted infections can be asymptomatic, which is why regular screening is particularly important. Early detection and treatment significantly increase the chances of recovery and prevent the spread of infection. At our dermatology clinic, we perform screenings and treatments in a discreet and professional environment.

How does a dermatological examination work?

Our dermatologists will answer all your questions

Consultation and medical history taking

At the beginning of the examination, the dermatologist will have a detailed conversation with the patient about their symptoms, previous illnesses, any sexual relationships, and family medical history. In the case of sexually transmitted infections, special attention is paid to symptoms such as skin changes, rashes, warts, or ulcers. During the medical history interview, all patient information is treated with discretion and confidentiality.

Physical examination

After taking your medical history, the dermatologist will thoroughly examine any lesions on your skin and mucous membranes. During the examination, the dermatologist pays particular attention to the skin of the genitals, oral cavity, and anal area, where signs of STIs often appear. The examination is painless and in many cases allows for an immediate diagnosis.

Laboratory tests and sampling

If necessary, further laboratory tests may be performed. The dermatologist may take a smear from the lesions or order a blood test for an accurate diagnosis. For example, a blood test may be necessary to diagnose syphilis, while a tissue sample may be required for HPV-related warts. These samples are quick and cause minimal discomfort.

Diagnosis and treatment plan

After making a diagnosis, the dermatologist will develop a detailed treatment plan. This may include medication (e.g., antibiotics, antiviral agents), topical treatments (creams, ointments), laser procedures, and, if necessary, additional specialist care or follow-up examinations. The aim of treatment is to eliminate the infection as quickly as possible and prevent complications.

Immediate laser genital wart removal

Genital warts (technical term: condyloma acuminatum) are most commonly caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV) and are often sexually transmitted. They primarily appear on the external genitals, around the vaginal opening, but can also appear in the vagina or on the cervix. Laser removal offers a modern, effective, and quick solution for treating these lesions.
